Clay’s Hope is a large two-story, three-bay brick building with a later two-story frame addition attached to the west. A large tobacco barn is located to the southwest of the house.
Dendrochronological analysis has shown that the primary house was constructed from timbers felled in the winter of 1777/8 while the secondary house was constructed from timbers felled in the winter of 1836/7. Although one of the timbers used in the construction of the tobacco barn was felled in the winter of 1793/4, three of the timbers used in the tobacco barn were felled in the summer of 1797 and six were felled in the winter of 1797/8, suggesting that the barn was constructed at this latter date or shortly thereafter.
