Rosemont is a five-bay, two-story Georgian structure later adapted to the Greek Revival style, as evidenced by the addition of a two-story porch. Probably the oldest house in Laurel, Rosemont was built by James Mitchell, father of Nathaniel Mitchell (1753-1814). Nathaniel Mitchell was a Delaware patriot who fought during the American Revolution and served as Delaware’s delegate to the Continental Congress and later as the state’s sixth governor.
Dendrochronological analysis has shown that the building was constructed from timbers felled during the summer of 1770, the winter of 1771/2, and the spring of 1772, suggesting that it was built in the spring of 1772 or shortly thereafter.
